Freelancers write a lot. Proposals, client emails, blog posts, product pages, LinkedIn posts, invoices with polite reminders. An AI writing assistant can take the blank page away.

But “AI writing assistant” covers very different tools. Some are general chatbots. Some fix your grammar. Some are built for marketing teams. This guide compares 8 tools side by side, so you can pick the right type first.

Prices checked on 1 November 2026. Prices are regular US dollar prices, before tax. We ignored first-time offers and regional prices.

We did not run our own tests. Everything below is based on what each vendor lists on its official pages.

General chat assistants

These are the tools most freelancers start with. You describe what you need, and they draft it. Then you ask for changes.

ChatGPT

Free plan: OpenAI’s pricing page lists unlimited everyday text chats on Free. Uploads, image creation, memory and deep research are limited.

Paid: ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month. OpenAI’s Help Center says there is no yearly plan. Plus lists more messages and uploads, deep research, projects, custom GPTs and extensions for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets.

Best for: freelancers who want one tool for many jobs: emails, outlines, social posts and quick edits. Is it worth paying for? Read Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month?

Claude

Free plan: Claude Free lists chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, up to 5 projects and Claude Docs. Usage is limited every 5 hours and every week.

Paid: Claude Pro costs $20 a month billed monthly, or $200 a year (about $17 a month). Claude lists at least 5 times the Free usage per session, unlimited projects and Research.

Best for: long documents such as reports, proposals and case studies. Projects let you keep a client’s brief and past work in one place. Head-to-head: Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus.

Gemini

Free plan: Gemini Free lists the Flash-Lite model, Deep Research, Canvas, Gems and 15 GB of storage.

Paid: Google lists Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month in the US. It lists 2x the Free usage and Gemini in Gmail. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and adds Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, plus 5 TB of storage.

Best for: freelancers who already work in Google Workspace. Google AI Plus is the cheapest paid plan in this guide.

Editing and polishing tools

These don’t replace your writing. They clean it up.

Grammarly

Free plan: $0, with grammar and spelling suggestions and 100 AI prompts a month.

Paid: Grammarly Pro. We could not confirm its price and billing period on Grammarly’s plans page, so we give no number. Check grammarly.com/plans before you pay. Pro lists 2,000 AI prompts a month, full-sentence rewrites, tone changes, plagiarism checks and AI-text detection.

Best for: freelancers who write their own first drafts and want them clean and consistent. Compare the monthly and yearly price at checkout.

QuillBot

Free plan: QuillBot’s help center lists paraphrasing up to 125 words at a time, summaries up to 1,200 words, two paraphrasing modes and a limited number of AI chat questions a day.

Paid: QuillBot’s own FAQ lists Premium at $19.95 a month, or $99.95 a year (about $8.33 a month). Its help center says prices can vary by region, so check yours.

Best for: rewording short passages and summarizing long ones. It is cheap on yearly billing.

A fair warning: don’t use a paraphraser to hide copied text. Clients and editors may treat that as plagiarism.

Writing inside your workspace

Notion AI

Free plan: Notion’s Free and Plus plans include a trial of Notion AI, not the full version.

Paid: Notion lists its AI features, Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes, on the Business plan, listed at $20 per member a month (the page does not say if that is the monthly or yearly rate). Plus is $10 per member a month (billed yearly), but it only includes the AI trial.

Best for: freelancers who already run their business in Notion: client wikis, content calendars, project notes. If you don’t use Notion yet, a chat assistant is cheaper.

Marketing copy tools

Jasper

Free plan: none. Jasper lists a 7-day free trial.

Paid: Jasper Pro costs $69 a month billed monthly, or $59 a month billed yearly, for one seat. It lists Brand Voices (2 on Pro) and marketing templates.

Best for: freelance marketers who write lots of on-brand copy for a few clients. For general writing, a $20 chat plan costs much less.

Copy.ai

Free plan: none. Copy.ai’s support pages say the free plan was retired.

Paid: the Chat plan costs $29 a month billed monthly, or $24 a month billed yearly ($288 a year). It lists up to 5 seats, unlimited words in chat and models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.

Best for: small agencies or teams who share one account. For one person, the 5 seats are less useful.

Tools we left out

  • Writesonic. Its pricing page now focuses on AI search visibility and SEO, with plans from $79 a month billed yearly. That is a marketing platform, not a simple writing assistant for most freelancers.
  • DeepL Write. DeepL’s pricing page only showed euro prices with VAT to us. We could not confirm a US dollar price, so we left it out for now.
  • Perplexity. It is great for research with sources, but it is not mainly a writing tool. See Perplexity vs ChatGPT.

How to choose in 3 questions

  1. Do you need ideas and drafts, or just cleaner text? Drafts: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. Cleaner text: Grammarly or QuillBot.
  2. Do you already live in one app? Google Workspace points to Gemini. Notion points to Notion AI.
  3. Do you write marketing copy for brands all day? Then Jasper or Copy.ai may be worth a trial. If not, skip them.

Most freelancers do fine with one chat assistant plus one free checker. That costs $0 on free plans, or $20 a month with one paid chat plan. See The cheapest AI stack for a freelancer.

A few honest rules for AI writing

  • Always edit the draft. AI text can sound generic and can contain mistakes.
  • Check every fact, name and number. These tools can state wrong things with confidence.
  • Tell clients if your contract requires it. Some clients ban or limit AI-written work.
  • Protect client data. Check each tool’s privacy settings before you paste anything private.

FAQ

What is the best free AI writing assistant?

It depends on the job. For drafting, ChatGPT Free lists unlimited everyday text chats, and Claude Free and Gemini Free are strong options too. For polishing, Grammarly Free and QuillBot Free both list free tiers with limits.

Is Grammarly Pro worth it if I already pay for ChatGPT or Claude?

Maybe not. A chat assistant can also fix grammar and tone. Grammarly’s strength is that it works where you type. If you only need that now and then, its free plan with 100 AI prompts a month may be enough.

Are Jasper and Copy.ai better writers than ChatGPT?

We can’t say. We did not test them. What we can say is that they cost more ($59–69 and $24–29 a month as listed) and focus on marketing and team features.

Can clients tell my text was written with AI?

Some tools claim to detect AI text, and Grammarly Pro lists AI-text detection. These checks are not perfect. The safest path is to edit drafts heavily and follow your client’s rules.

Do these prices include tax?

No. All prices are US dollars before tax, checked on 1 November 2026. Your local price and VAT may be different.

The bottom line

  • Most freelance writers: one chat assistant (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini) plus Grammarly Free or QuillBot Free.
  • Writers of long reports and proposals: start with Claude. Pro is $20 a month, or $200 a year.
  • Google Workspace users on a budget: Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month.
  • Self-editors who want polish: Grammarly Free first, then Pro if you hit the 100-prompt limit (check the current price on grammarly.com/plans).
  • Notion fans: Notion AI makes sense if you already run your work there.
  • Freelance marketers with brand clients: try Jasper’s 7-day trial or Copy.ai before paying.
