Research eats time. You need facts for a client report, numbers for a pitch, or background for an article. AI tools promise to do the digging for you.

Perplexity and ChatGPT are two of the best-known options. Both can search the web. Both show links to sources. So which one should a freelancer pick?

We used only the official pricing pages and help centers of OpenAI and Perplexity. We did not run our own tests or benchmarks. When we say a tool “lists” a feature, we mean the vendor says so.

Prices checked on 1 November 2026. Prices are in US dollars, before tax, at the regular price. Plans change often, so check the official page before you pay.

Price: what you actually pay

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month (see our guide on whether ChatGPT Plus is worth it). OpenAI’s Help Center says it is billed monthly, and there is no yearly plan for Plus. OpenAI also has a cheaper plan called Go, listed at $8 a month on OpenAI’s Codex pricing page. OpenAI says Go may include ads.

Perplexity Pro: price not confirmed. Perplexity’s official pricing pages did not open for us on 1 November 2026, so we give no number. Perplexity also has Max, Education Pro and Enterprise Pro plans. Check the official page for current prices before you buy.

One more cost to know about. Perplexity has an AI assistant called Computer that does multi-step work. It runs on credits. Perplexity says normal “Ask” searches do not use credits. Paid Pro plans include some weekly Computer usage, and auto-refill is off by default. If you only want search, you never need to buy credits.

Free plans compared

Both free plans are useful for light research.

Perplexity Free lists 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month. It does not include image generation or the advanced models. Basic searches still show links to sources.

ChatGPT Free lists unlimited text chats, with some guardrails against abuse. Web search is available on Free, and even to people who are not signed in. Deep research, file uploads and image creation are all limited on Free.

If you research a few times a week, either free plan may be enough. Try both on the same question and see which one you like reading.

Search and research features

Perplexity

Perplexity is built around search. Its Help Center lists these features:

  • Pro Search. Every answer includes direct links to the original sources.
  • Research mode. It runs dozens of searches and reads hundreds of sources. It takes about 2 to 4 minutes and can export a report to PDF. You can’t choose the model in Research mode.
  • Model choice on Pro. Pro lists models from several companies, including Perplexity’s own Sonar, plus models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
  • Files and apps. Pro lists a feature to create files and simple apps.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a general assistant that can also search. OpenAI’s pages list:

  • Web search on every plan. ChatGPT may search on its own when a question needs current facts, or you can choose Search from the tools menu.
  • Deep research. Limited on Free and Go, full on Plus and Pro.
  • Projects on all plans, to keep research for one client in one place.
  • Extras on Plus, like scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, interactive tables and charts, and extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets.

Citations: how each one shows sources

This is the big one for research.

Perplexity says every Pro Search answer links to original sources. Pro lists “10x as many citations per answer”. Perplexity also adds labels to some sources, like Government, Academic or Trusted. But Perplexity itself says a label is “never a substitute for reading the source yourself”.

ChatGPT says answers that use web search “may include citations”. You can click a citation to open the source, and open a Sources panel to see more links. OpenAI also warns that search results and citations “can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect”.

So the vendors themselves agree on one thing: the AI can be wrong, even with a link next to it.

Always check the sources yourself

This is not optional. Before you put any AI fact in client work:

  1. Click the link. Make sure the page really says what the answer claims.
  2. Check the date. An old page may be out of date.
  3. Prefer the original. Use the government site, the company’s own page or the study itself, not a blog that quotes it.
  4. Watch the numbers. Copy figures from the source, not from the AI summary.

If a fact matters for money, health or the law, ask a qualified person. AI research is a starting point, not the final word.

Privacy and your data

Perplexity’s Help Center lists “opt-out AI training available” for Pro and Max. On Free, it lists “Standard” data privacy.

OpenAI’s Terms of Use say you can opt out of having your content used to train its models.

If you research for clients, read each privacy policy. Do not paste confidential client data into any AI tool unless your contract allows it.

FAQ

Is Perplexity cheaper than ChatGPT?

We can’t say yet. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month (monthly only). We could not confirm Perplexity Pro’s price on an official page, so compare both on the day you buy.

Which one gives better sources?

We did not test quality. Perplexity says every Pro Search answer links to sources, and Pro lists more citations per answer. ChatGPT says search answers may include citations. Either way, open the links yourself.

Can I use both for free?

Yes. Both list a free plan with web search. Perplexity Free has 3 Pro Searches a day. ChatGPT Free has limited deep research.

Do I need to buy Perplexity credits?

No, not for search. Perplexity says Ask searches do not use credits. Credits are only for its Computer assistant.

Can AI research replace a professional?

No. Use it to find sources faster. For legal, medical or financial questions, talk to a qualified professional.

Which is best for you?

  • Writers and journalists: Perplexity. It is built around search and lists links on every Pro Search answer, which makes fact-checking quicker.
  • Consultants and analysts: Perplexity Pro for source-heavy reports, or ChatGPT Plus if you also want charts and Excel or Sheets extensions.
  • Marketers and copywriters: ChatGPT Plus. You get search plus writing, image creation and custom GPTs in one plan.
  • Developers and technical freelancers: ChatGPT Plus, which also lists Codex and other coding tools.
  • Light users on a budget: stay on both free plans and use each one for what it does best.

The honest answer: if research is most of your job, Perplexity’s features fit it more closely. If research is one task among many, ChatGPT Plus covers more ground. Both need you to check the sources.
